Nevada is home to the “Marriage Capital of the World,” and has seen countless love stories unfold in marriage. But once the wedding festivities are over, it’s important to tackle some practical matters–like health insurance. While navigating health insurance can feel daunting, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know so you and your spouse can focus on living happily ever after.

Does Marriage Qualify You For SEP?

Great news, newlyweds! If you’ve recently tied the knot, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period through Nevada Health Link. This means you can adjust your health insurance or enroll in a new plan outside of Open Enrollment (November 1 – January 15). It’s not just marriage that qualifies you–divorce or legal separation resulting in the loss of health insurance, having a baby, adopting a child, or placing a child in foster care or adoption also make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period.

Separate or Joint Health Insurance Plans?

What’s mine is yours, right? Well, when it comes to health insurance, married couples have options! Married couples can have separate health insurance plans, so if you have an individual plan you simply don’t want to part with, there’s no need to make a change. However, combining your coverage under one plan might be a more economical choice for some couples. Plus, hopping on your spouse’s insurance comes with perks like cutting down on paperwork, and making it easier to track your coverage and benefits.

Additionally, if you’re covered under your parent’s health insurance plan, you might want to keep that coverage after you are married. Federal law allows young adults to keep their coverage under their parent’s plan until they turn 26, even if they get married before then. And guess what? You don’t have to live with your folks to keep that coverage. You can enjoy your newlywed bliss without worrying about a health insurance switch up–so, stay calm and stay covered.

Your Wedding Certificate Isn’t the Only Document You Need to Think About

While turning in your wedding certificate is a large part of the process, it may not be the only paperwork you’ll need to handle after you make your way down the aisle. When applying for Nevada Health Link coverage and qualifying for a Special Enrollment Period, you might need to provide documents to confirm your eligibility. If your results indicate that no documents are needed, simply pick a plan and enroll. However, if you are asked for documents, make sure to submit the required documents promptly. Your coverage will start on the first day of the month after you pick a plan, as long as the premiums are paid. Much like wedding planning, timelines are important here, so keep those in mind to ensure a smooth start to your coverage.

  • Choose a health insurance plan within 60 days from the date of marriage.
  • Coverage starts on the first day of the month after selecting a plan and paying premiums.

Sorting out health insurance may not be the most romantic part of marriage, but it’s a crucial step for your peace of mind and long-term financial stability. Nevada Health Link is dedicated to helping you navigate your options so you can make informed decisions that best suit your needs and allow you and your spouse to clear the path for a long and happy life together. Cheers to a secure and bright journey ahead!
