You may avoid financial ruin
While you may consider yourself relatively healthy now, you never know when your health might change. You could be one ski trip in Tahoe away from financial ruin, due to an unexpected fall, or may develop a serious illness like cancer. We all know not having health insurance is expensive, but how much will it set you back? Find out with our “cost of not having health insurance” blog.
You may lose your access to preventative care
Not having health insurance means that you may lose access to your primary care physician and preventative care. Qualified health plans require that ten essential health benefits are covered under your policy. Ambulance services and care, emergency service, hospitalization, maternity and newborn care, mental health and substance abuse disorder treatment, prescription drugs, rehabilitation and habilitation services and devices, lab services, preventive and wellness services, chronic disease support and pediatric services are all covered under a qualified health plan. While all qualified plans must offer these ten essential health benefits, the scope of each plan may differ slightly. If you choose to not renew your health insurance, getting into your primary care physician for preventative care may become harder and more expensive.
You may lose options to reduce health care costs
When applying for health insurance through Nevada Health Link, you’ll find out if you qualify for premium tax credits. Cost sharing reductions will reduce the amount you have to pay for premiums, deductibles and copayments. If you wish to take advantage of these cost-sharing reductions, you must enroll in a Silver plan. Estimate your health insurance costs here.
If you’re not currently enrolled in health coverage, certain qualifying life events (QLE) may make you eligible for a special enrollment period. QLE’s are life-changing events such as job loss, income change, marriage/divorce and birth/adoption of a child to name a few.
